Why Cebu?

Like the Philippines itself, Cebu is a testament to centuries of change, an island shaped by a multitude of shared experiences and influences over time. Long before colonization, Cebu thrived with a well-established social structure. Communities, composed of around 30 to 100 households, called barangays, were led by datus who served as leaders, peacemakers, decision-makers, and protectors. This stable and rooted culture laid the foundation for the rich tapestry that is Cebu today.

By the time the Spaniards came, Cebu formally became the oldest city in the country. Declared as the capital of the Philippines, the city became a major trading port. Traders and merchants from all over the world exchanged goods in the city, bringing with them their rich traditions and cultures that added to the tapestry of influences that shaped Cebu. Historical records suggest that the term “Cebu” may have originated from the word “Sibu” which means “trade.” From being a fishing village, Cebu has become an important trading center, becoming one of the most progressive cities to date. Notably, Catholicism spread. Along with that, many rituals, traditions, and practices were added to the Cebuano practice.

Having witnessed centuries of change, the island of Cebu has a soul that is not only deep but also rich and diverse. An island, along with its people, that has stood the test of time and influence, showcasing their valiant spirit throughout history. Today, Cebu stands as a captivating mix of the old and the new.

A Fusion of Heritage and Fun

As the New Year’s celebration comes to an end, chants of “Pit Senyor” and “Prititit” rise from the streets, signaling the arrival of the Sinulog Festival. This vibrant tradition, forever etched in the hearts of Cebuanos, unfolds for nine extraordinary days. As a testament to the faith, the nine-day celebration starts with a novena mass at the Basilica Minore Del Santo Nino, on the eighth day, a fluvial procession takes place where the revered image of the Santo Nino makes its way through the waters. Finally, on the ninth day, the celebration ends with the grand parade. Floats explode with color, dancers move in harmony, and music thrums through the air, captivating hearts and igniting the soul. On the day of the grand parade, the city comes to life – musical concerts, talent competitions, street parties, and cultural exhibits – all showcasing Cebu’s rich culture. Truly, it is no wonder that the Sinulog festival draws devotees and tourists all around the world.
